Rock Star wins the inaugural 2010 Miami Open Billfish Series
Miami-based Rock Star, led by owner/angler Jorge Piedra, released four fish on Day One to win the third-seed position going into the championship fishing days held during the Yamaha Contender Miami Billfish Tournament. Tagline and Qualifier each earned wildcard positions on the first day and joined Rock Star, Wound Up and High Standards to make up the five teams vying for the MOBS Championship title. On the first championship fishing day, both Rock Star and Tagline released 10 fish, followed by High Standards with eight, Qualifier with six and Wound Up with five releases. On the final day of fishing, Rock Star, led by Capt. Scott Leon, kicked it into high gear, releasing 11 fish for a total of 21 releases. Rock Star anglers Jorge Piedra, Rudy Espinosa Sr., Joe Turner, Ovi Vento, Rudy Espinosa Jr., Henry Jimenez and Eloy Dominguez received a wonderful prize package, including King Sailfish Mounts trophies, championship apparel from Hook & Tackle, Accurate rod-and-reel combos, Fin-Nor rod-and-reel combos, championship Reactor Watches, championship Vanmark Jewelry money clips and a check for $14,400. Wound Up finished second in the championship with 17 releases, followed by High Standards with 15, Tagline with 14 and Qualifier with 10.
Rock Star had a fantastic season highlighted by a first-leg win at the Sailfish Tournament, followed by consecutive third-place outboard-boat finishes in the Mayor’s Cup and Bob Lewis and a win at the Yamaha Contender Miami Billfish Tournament. In addition to all the hardware and cash, Rock Star received an invitation to the 2011 IGFA Offshore World Championship.
